*4:Halfway through Nono Gigsta's sequel to her 2018 Freerotation set, also named The House of Crocodiles, we get an indication of the strange title's origins. "The males' rippling flesh sends soundwaves through the water… humans can barely hear them, but the crocodiles can. Welcome to the House of Crocodiles," a sample narrates. And then, oh so naturally, it moves into a roaring electric guitar solo (Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"). It's a bonkers move that can prompt you to completely rethink what DJing can be. It's also completely natural in the hands of the Belgian DJ.
*5:Jaw-dropping transitions dominate this two-hour recording, aptly described as "Big Blend Academy" by one commenter. Low-end frequencies anchor the mix as it darts through wild variations in mood and tempo. Dubwise experiments (LUXE's "Diamond Dub") morph into frenetic jazz techno (Gigi FM's "Gabriella"), sounding like DJ Sprinkles if she dabbled in UK bass. You can feel Gigsta's sense of freedom as she aqueously glides across loose and liquid rhythms.
*6:Freewheeling mixes of this sort often risk being overly headsy, but this is a very fun listen that spans Björk, Foster Sylvers and Victoria Monet. The inclusion of more "popular music" only adds to the overwhelming sense of feverish delight. There's only one reasonable response to a mix this audacious: "WTF." - Bella Aquilina
*7:Chucheewa, one-half of Bangkok duo Acid Sister, thrives in slow tempos where she can flex her storytelling skills. In this mix, she's the sonic embodiment of an off-duty femme fatale. Balearic downtempo, acid house, dubby disco and woozy krautrock criss-cross one another like whispery marble veins, transporting listeners to a sleek, '70s-style disco where our protagonist is getting her lounge on. There's a nonchalant swagger underlining every track, as if mirroring her breezy movements. The mood is loose-limbed but there's a high degree of intellect and intention behind each rhythm, just like a Bond girl's alluringly sharp demeanour. - Nyshka Chandran
*8:For Black History Month, New York's JADALAREIGN explored the myriad shades of deep house through a futurist lens. Selections emphasise the radical spirit behind Black music-making, whether via icy, austere melodies or the psychedelic squelches of 303s. Cruising through under-the-radar classics (Felix Da Housecat's "Free Love") and curveballs (Sweater on Polo's "Computer Controlled Madness"), the Nowadays booker zones in on tunes with a spacey touch that often borders on kooky (just look at Marcus Mixx's twisted jack track "Salut The Noize With A Laugh"). This is a concise but essential glimpse into the innovative imaginations of Chicago and Detroit artists, past and present. - Nyshka Chandran
*9:If you caught our Glastonbury recap from earlier this year, you'll already know that Mia Koden's opening set at the IICON stage was something special. A "blend of celestial, 2562-esque dubstep backdropped by a beautiful sunset," as one RA staffer put it. For FMB, the London-based artist condensed that two-and-a-half-hour set into this lean power-hour of soulful sub-pressure. Just listen to the way she moves from the soothing resplendence of Ella Fitzgerald to the dank 140 of Slimy, Delta and Obskure within the opening ten minutes. *10:2024 was a career-defining year for Canadian DJ and producer Priori, whose entry into the vaunted Dekmantel series blooms with spiralling, psychedelia-dipped sound design. This 90-minute session bears more resemblance to a longform song than a tapestry of different ones, applying incredible attention to detail by collaging deep and squelchy textures that sit as much in the future as they do in the past. If a snapshot could be taken of the styles that reigned 2024's dance floors, it's this: an incredibly cohesive and soft-hued marriage of nimble breakbeats, techno and trance from an artist going from strength to strength. - Chloe Lula
*11:The appeal of a festival lies in its promise of escape from the mundane, and there's perhaps no better soundtrack to this promise than Reptant. A key figure in the electro revival, the Melbourne producer is known for a sleek, omnivorous sound that blends elements of tech house, trance and techno. His powers shine in this live recording from Portugal's Waking Life festival, which brims with otherworldly ambience. One standout at the 22-minute mark sounds as if Mike Skinner and Plastikman made an electro record together. Reptant later called it his "most special" gig ever. *12:DJ SWISHA is currently operating at the peak of his powers. With a doctorate-level grasp of Black American dance music and UK breakbeat, he's a true mixologist with a PhD in tearing up the club. This recording proves it. Effortlessly weaving through East Coast club, ghetto house, jungle and footwork, there's an enviable ease to every blend. But because it slipped through the cracks of year-end coverage, and the legendary mix series shut down weeks later, we decided to bend the rules. Plus, it's totally mesmerising, the kind of mix that triggers 1,000 wormholes and—should you listen in a particularly fragile state—possibly floods of tears. This is bold, cinematic, heart-on-sleeve DJing. A long ambient first half features tracks from Ulla, Burial and Slikback before morphing into headbanging mode with shards of Verraco, Eartheater and Lil Wayne. The Dar Es Salaam artist infuses techno and taarab into the famously hi-NRG genre, adding a touch of experimentalism and contemporary rave to its frenzied tempos. For many in attendance, this was a clear highlight of Draaimolen Festival and it's easy to understand why. His vibrant selections possess a sense of urgency, commanding movement through jolting synths and madcap effects. The crowd vibed so hard that Travella ended up dancing on top of the decks—a perfect picture of singeli's joyful nature. - Nyshka Chandran
*15:Three things are guaranteed when these two subversive powerhouses link up: an onslaught of Latin-infused bass trax, coquettish flexes about diva behaviour and an involuntary desire to throw ass. Venezuelan rave doll Yajaira La Beyaca has been on a tear since 2021, but this hybrid live set—one of her first in Europe—alongside frequent collaborator Genosidra, demonstrates an artist fully stepping into her powers. Darting through apocalyptic perreo, guaracha and what some call Latincore, this session is a soundtrack for all your freaky pre-club rituals.
